509th Bomb WingMissionThe 509th Bomb Wing makes its home at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., and operates the Air Force's premier weapon system, the B-2 Spirit bomber. The 509th BW can trace its historical roots to its World War II ancestor, the 509th Composite Group. This unit was formed with one mission in mind: to drop the atomic bomb. The unit made history on Aug. 6, 1945, when the B-29 Superfortress "Enola Gay" dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.Today, the wing's mission is to bring the full spectrum of expeditionary global power of the B-2 for combat support capabilities to combatant commanders. With the B-2, the wing can bring massive firepower to bear, in a short time, anywhere on the globe through previously impenetrable defenses. 509th Bomb Wing Social Media Sites 509th Bomb Wing Training Support Business Center |
